BYD SHARK lands in the UK

A 436bhp plug-in hybrid pickup that wants to take on diesel.

The pickup world has been crying out for something genuinely different. Most manufacturers have simply tweaked the same diesel recipe for years, but BYD has decided to throw the rulebook in the load bed and start again.

Meet the BYD SHARK – the Chinese manufacturer's first-ever pickup and one of the first plug-in hybrid trucks to arrive in the UK. Instead of relying on a big diesel engine, it combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with twin electric motors to produce a hefty 436PS (430bhp) and 650Nm of torque.

That makes it considerably quicker than most pickups on sale today, with a claimed 0-62mph time of just 5.7 seconds. More importantly for many buyers, it'll also travel up to 55 miles on electric power alone, meaning plenty of commuting, school runs or local jobs could be completed without firing up the petrol engine.

One important caveat - the BYD Shark weighs in at a hefty 2,710kg, so you will have to stick to commercial speeds:

  • Single carriageway: 50mph

  • Dual carriageway: 60mph

  • Motorway: 70mph

Built for work... and weekends

Like any proper pickup, the SHARK hasn't forgotten what it's supposed to be.

It rides on a ladder-frame chassis, comes with intelligent four-wheel drive, selectable terrain modes for mud, sand, snow and gravel, and features Hill Descent Control as standard.

There's a 1,200-litre load bed, a 790kg payload, and it can tow 2,500kg. Those figures won't trouble the biggest diesel tow vehicles, but they'll be enough for many owners loading camping gear, trailers, motorcycles or work equipment.

One clever feature we particularly like is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). Two onboard power sockets allow the truck's battery to power everything from power tools on site to kettles, coffee machines or even a pressure washer when you're miles from the nearest plug socket. If you've ever camped at a green lane or remote campsite wishing you had mains power, you'll immediately understand the appeal.

Less commercial vehicle, more SUV

Step inside and it's obvious BYD hasn't copied the traditional pickup formula.

Instead of acres of hard plastics and tiny infotainment screens, the SHARK feels much closer to a modern SUV. Heated and ventilated front seats, a huge rotating 15.6” touchscreen, digital instruments, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system and a head-up display all come as standard.

Rear passengers haven't been forgotten either. A flat floor and generous legroom should make life considerably more comfortable than in many double-cab rivals, where the back seats often feel like an afterthought.

Underneath: BYD's clever hybrid tech

The SHARK uses BYD's latest Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) plug-in hybrid system.

Unlike many hybrids that constantly rely on the petrol engine, the SHARK is designed to drive electrically whenever possible. Most of the time the petrol engine acts as a generator, supplying electricity to either the motors or BYD's 32.2kWh Blade Battery.

When more performance is needed, the engine joins in, combining with the electric motors to deliver the full 436PS. According to BYD, the result is sports-car pace with fuel economy claimed at up to 80.7mpg (WLTP).

As ever, we'll reserve judgement until we've tested it ourselves in the real world.

Our first thoughts

The pickup market has been remarkably conservative for years. Diesel engines, leaf springs and modest performance have largely been accepted as part of the package.

The SHARK changes that conversation.

Whether traditional pickup buyers are ready for a plug-in hybrid remains to be seen, but on paper there's a lot to like. Plenty of power, a genuinely useful electric range, clever campsite-friendly technology and an interior that doesn't feel like it belongs in 2015.

The only real question now is whether it can back those impressive numbers up once it's covered in mud, loaded with kit and pointed at the sort of terrain pickup owners actually use.

That's the test we're looking forward to.

The BYD SHARK is available to order now from £47,290 including VAT, with first UK deliveries expected during the final quarter of 2026.
