The Brew Company Coffee Brewer Review

Proper Coffee Without the Camping Faff

If you've spent any amount of time camping, green laning, overlanding or simply hiding from your family in a field somewhere, you'll know that coffee can make or break a morning.

A decent brew can transform you from a grumpy, half-frozen cave dweller into a functioning member of society. A bad brew, on the other hand, leaves you wondering why you bothered crawling out of your sleeping bag in the first place.

At a recent outdoor show, I picked up a few complimentary samples of The Brew Company's Coffee Brewer bags. I wasn't planning on writing about them. In fact, I fully expected them to be another gimmicky camping coffee product destined for the back of a drawer. But after trying them, I was genuinely impressed. So much so, I thought they deserved a mention.

What Is It?

The Brew Company is a Danish company that has come up with an incredibly simple way of making proper filter coffee without carrying around a cafetière, AeroPress, percolator or any other coffee-making contraption that inevitably ends up rattling around the back of your 4x4.

Each Coffee Brewer comes as a sealed pouch containing freshly ground speciality coffee inside what looks like an oversized tea bag crossed with a miniature camping dry bag.

Ease of Use

This is where the Coffee Brewer absolutely shines.

The instructions are printed clearly on the outside of the bag, making it virtually idiot-proof. Even before my first coffee of the day - which is usually when my brain resembles cold porridge - I managed to use it successfully.

Open the pouch.

Add hot water.

Wait a few minutes for it to brew.

Pour.

Job done. No gadgets. No filters. No measuring spoons. No washing up.

The clever design allows the coffee grounds to remain separated from the brewed coffee, creating a surprisingly clean cup without sediment floating around the bottom.

For campers, overlanders and anyone travelling light, it's a brilliant solution. It takes up almost no space, weighs next to nothing and doesn't require any additional equipment beyond a kettle.

Whether you're brewing beside a mountain lake, in a muddy campsite or leaning against the tailgate of your Defender at 6am wondering whose idea this trip was, it's incredibly convenient.

But Is the Coffee Any Good?

Thankfully, yes. Very good, in fact.

The samples I received offered far more flavour than most instant coffees and were noticeably smoother than many supermarket ground coffees I've tried over the years.

There's genuine depth to the flavour. You can tell The Brew Company takes its coffee seriously rather than simply focusing on the packaging and convenience.

Different varieties naturally offer different flavour profiles, but every sample I tried delivered a rich, well-balanced cup that felt much closer to café-quality coffee than campsite coffee.

And let's be honest, that's exactly what most of us are looking for.

Something significantly better than instant granules without requiring the sort of equipment list normally associated with a small artisan coffee shop.

Perfect for Outdoor Adventures

The Coffee Brewer feels like it was designed specifically for outdoor enthusiasts.

Space is always at a premium when travelling, particularly if you've already filled your vehicle with camping kit, recovery gear, dogs, waterproofs, folding chairs, firewood and enough snacks to survive a small apocalypse.

The flat-pack design slips easily into a drawer, glovebox, backpack or camping box.

Because each brewer is self-contained, it's also ideal for longer trips where convenience matters.

You don't need to clean filters. You don't need to carry additional brewing equipment. You don't even need to worry about coffee going stale once opened.

Simply grab a pouch when needed and enjoy.

Any Drawbacks?

Nothing's perfect, and there are a couple of minor negatives worth mentioning.

Cost. UK RRP is £2.00 per sachet for all flavours apart from the caffeine enriched Power Coffee which is £2.50. Granted, they're not the cheapest way to drink coffee. Compared with a jar of instant coffee, the cost per brew is significantly higher. However, that's rather like comparing a pub steak to a microwave burger. They're not really targeting the same audience.

Then, if you're brewing for a large group every morning, you'll get through the pouches fairly quickly.

They're arguably better suited to individuals, couples or occasional use rather than serving coffee to an entire campsite.

Verdict

The Brew Company Coffee Brewer is one of those products that quietly solves a problem you didn't realise needed solving.

It delivers genuinely good coffee with almost zero effort, requires no specialist equipment and is perfectly suited to life on the road, at camp or anywhere else hot water is available.

For solo travellers, campers, overlanders and 4x4 owners who value convenience without sacrificing quality, it's an excellent bit of kit.

What started as a free sample quickly turned into something I'll happily spend my own money on in future.

And that's probably the biggest compliment any reviewer can give.

If your idea of outdoor luxury is a proper brew while watching the sun rise over a campsite rather than sipping something that tastes vaguely of burnt cardboard, The Brew Company Coffee Brewer is well worth a look.

Brew Company coffee is available in the UK from an ever growing list of retailers, and is also available from the official UK distributer: New Heights.
