Kindling Cracker Review

Let’s be honest, there are only two types of people in this world – those who get oddly excited about splitting wood, and those who lie about it. There’s something deeply satisfying about turning a big gnarly log into neat little chunks of fire-starting kindling, especially when you’ve done it without removing any toes or upsetting the dog with another axe-related swear-fest.

So when Fandango Fire Tools sent over not just one but two Kindling Cracker Premium Bundles – the Original and the big daddy King – we knew we were in for some proper wood-whacking fun.

What Are They, Then?

The Kindling Cracker is a clever Kiwi invention. Ayla Hutchinson was only 13 years old when she invented the Kindling Cracker. After Ayla's mother injured her finger while splitting wood with an axe she became determined to find a safer alternative, and this is it.

Essentially, the Kindling Cracker is a cast iron ring with a wedge inside that makes kindling without all the drama. You place a log in the centre, give it a firm whack from above, and the blade below does the rest. It’s basically the kitchen mandoline of the log-splitting world, only much less likely to end in finger loss.

The Original version is ideal for logs up to around 16cm wide, while the King is made for the big boys – logs up to 22cm. If you’re regularly dealing with chunky timber or just want to feel a bit more Thor-like, the King’s your fella.

Premium Bundles – What You Actually Get

As I mentioned, Fandango didn’t just send the bare bones – they sent the full Premium Bundles for both versions, which include:

  • The Kindling Cracker Original or King

  • A hefty metal mallet – perfectly balanced and solid enough to make you feel like a Norse god on a tea break

  • A durable outdoor cover, so you can leave it outside in the elements without it going crusty

  • A box of natural fire starters – ideal for getting your fire going with no fuss or chemical pong

It’s a proper, thought-through setup.

Build Quality

Whether you go for the Original or the King, both Crackers are made from recycled Australian cast-iron, and forged in one complete mould. They feel like tools from the days when things were built to last, the kind of item you’ll pass down through generations along with war stories and questionable camping recipes.

The blade is safely recessed and doesn’t need sharpening. It’s all very low-maintenance and practically bombproof. The hammer is just as solid – proper weighty, with a satisfying thud when it hits home. That said, you may need something a bit heavier if you have logs that are particularly dense and difficult to split, like below. The cover is thick and waterproof with elastic edges that snugly fit around the Cracker, and the fire starters? Well, they’re clean-burning, stink-free, and do exactly what they say on the tin.

In Practise

Using either version is the same joyful process: drop a log in the ring, grab your hammer and let loose.

With the Original, it’s quick and controlled – perfect for regular firewood and kindling duty around the home, log burner or fire pit. The King, on the other hand, is like kindling on steroids. It laughs in the face of chunky logs and splits them with one or two mighty clouts. If you’ve got a big fire to feed or you’re just a sucker for overkill, the King will be your new best mate.

Portability & Setup

They’re not lightweight tools, especially the King, but they’re still easy enough to shift around your garden or chuck in the back of your 4x4 for a weekend in the woods. Bolt them to a chopping block for extra stability, or use them free-standing if you’re just having a quick split before tea.

The cover’s a real bonus – especially for UK weather. Stick it on, forget about it, and the Cracker’s protected from rain, snow, and nosy squirrels.

Who’s It For?

  • Campers and off-road adventurers who love a proper fire setup

  • Wood burner and fire pit fans who don’t trust themselves with an axe

  • Families who want a safer way for older kids to help with fire prep

  • Anyone sick of kindling being the one chore that’s never quite right

Drawbacks?

Well, they’re not the cheapest option out there, but they’re the best option if you value safety, speed, and satisfaction. And considering they’ll likely outlast your car, your garden shed, and possibly your knees, it’s a sound investment.

Seriously though, it could be argued that certain axe wielding skills are being lost, but I for one am happy with losing that instead of fingers.

The Verdict

The Kindling Cracker Premium Bundles from Fandango Fire Tools are, quite frankly, brilliant. Everything about them, from the cast iron base to the included hammer and thoughtful extras screams quality and long-term usefulness.

The Original is perfect for day-to-day kindling needs, and the King is ideal if you’ve got bigger logs or just enjoy wielding a hammer with purpose. The bundles take away all the guesswork: no need to go shopping for extras, because they’ve sorted the lot.

Oh, and have I mentioned the 5-year warranty, a 90-day no fuss return process?

There’s a weird and wonderful joy in splitting wood, especially when it’s this safe, easy, and effective. Fandango’s premium bundles take all the hassle out of the job – no axe, no guesswork, no lost digits.

In short: smashing logs, not fingers. That’s a win in our book.
