Helinox Savanna Chair Review

What is the Helinox Savanna?

Here at Muddy Towers we are both a tad on the larger size, so when we were asked if we’d like to review a Helinox chair we opted for one of their ‘extra roomy chairs’ - the Savanna.

The Savanna chair is not only one of the most comfortable chairs Helinox has ever made, but it also sits higher off the ground, and features a tall back and wide seat that’s designed to keep you comfortable.

How Easy Is It to Set Up?

It’s really easy to put together. Once you’ve removed it from its carry bag, which packs into a 50.5cm x 16.5cm x 16.5cm zip cylinder case that has a daisy chain and D-ring, simply unravel the seat material, and inside you’ll find the frame.

The frame is built with ultra-lightweight, and exceptionally strong (it can hold up to 145Kg, that’s 23 stones for us oldies), DAC aluminium alloy poles. The poles for the legs and back are all attached to the main section by elastic - like tent poles, so they easily spring into the correct slots. Once the frame is set, you attach the seat material over the four frame points, and it’s done.

Features

Built into the chair, there’s a special place to rest your head. Tuck a small travel pillow or something soft, like a puffy jacket or fleece blanket, into the headrest flap to cushion your head and support your neck, with the benefit that whatever you use won’t move around.

The Savanna chair also features integrated cup holders on the side of each armrest, one for the drink of your choice, the other for snacks!

Some folding chairs we’ve tested in the past have uncomfortable bars or lumpy material under your thighs, the Savanna doesn’t, which makes for a much more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Any Drawbacks?

The angle it sits at makes it great for campfire lounging, and even a sneaky nap, but it’s not a sit-up-at-the-table shape. That said, if you use the approriately sized Helinox table, like their Table One, then it’s not a problem.

Helinox is premium technical brand, and the price could put off the casual camper, but for those who want simple quality, and sturdy, yet lightweight gear which will last, this chair is definitely worth the money.

Should You Buy the Helinox Savanna Chair?

The Helinox Savanna is a solid choice for travellers who want comfort without compromising on packability. Strong, supportive, and quick to set up, it’s built for long evenings around the fire after a day on the trails. The high back, wide seat, and headrest flap make it far more comfortable than most camp chairs. For relaxing, it’s spot on.
