Outwell Jewel Lantern
We have reviewed many lanterns over the years, many of which do so many things that you don’t necessarily need. Does anyone really need 10 different colour cycles in their camping light?
Well this little lantern bucks the trend - the Jewel Lantern is a compact, pop-up light, plain and simple, and simple is exactly what it is.
Press the white top down, and the light automatically pops up and turns on, that’s it. What more do you need? In the middle of the night, when you just want to easily see what you are doing without having to fiddle about with tiny, hard to find buttons it comes into its own.
Powered by 3 AAA standard batteries, it has a generous 143 lumens, so it will easily light up your tent, or just pop it on your table for a bit of outdoor ambiance. It has double metal hooks underneath so you can hang it as a top light in your tent, and there are also 2 magnets, so if you need to have a quick look under the bonnet or see what you are doing in the dark, you can just pop it on a car panel and all will be revealed.
I like that the light is opaque so it gives a soft glow that won’t burn your retinas if you happen to look straight at it. It weighs a mere 112g, and the body of the light is a joy to touch as it has a very pleasant soft suede-like feel.
Any Drawbacks
Being powered by batteries may mean having to bring along spares if you are camping for a few days. That said batteries can also be a benefit as you can buy AAA batteries pretty much everywhere, unlike finding cables and charging points. Also looking at the price, not having a rechargeable battery helps bring the cost way down.
Our Verdict
Its small size - 6.3cm(H) x 6.7cm(Dia.), makes it a convenient addition to your camping gear or emergency kit, and I also think it would make a great night light for kids’ bedrooms as the pop-up function would be simple for little hands.
It’s a very affordable, simple lantern that is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use, and it offers bright, reliable light wherever you need it.
