The new Toyota Aygo X Hybrid: even more fun, even more efficient
Toyota’s smallest motor is getting a big green upgrade. Say hello to the new Toyota Aygo X Hybrid, a pint-sized city slicker that’s bringing full hybrid tech to the A-segment for the first time. And no, you don’t have to plug it in, it just gets on with the job, like a trusty mate with a flask of tea and a packet of Hobnobs.
Set to go on sale at the end of 2025, the Aygo X Hybrid promises to be the most CO₂-friendly non-plug-in car on the market (based on projected WLTP figures), all while keeping that cheeky Aygo character that’s made it a hit across Europe since 2022. Over 287,000 have found homes already, and now the hybrid version aims to charm your nan, your niece, and anyone who fancies a stylish runabout that won’t scare the polar bears.
It’s Still Tiny – Just Smarter
Despite its new fancy innards, the Aygo X Hybrid is still as dinky as ever, perfect for squeezing through tight urban gaps or negotiating Tesco car parks without triggering a domestic. It’s still got its 2,430mm wheelbase, a respectable 231-litre boot (room for a weekend’s worth of camping tat or a medium-sized dog), and it now boasts more power, sharper acceleration, and a smoother ride than before - which being fair, it needed.
That’s thanks to the same hybrid system found in the Yaris and Yaris Cross, though in this case, it’s been cleverly re-packaged to fit in the Aygo’s dinky shell. Engineers shuffled the battery cells under the rear seats and shoved the auxiliary battery under the boot floor, which means no compromise on space. Even the front overhang got a 76mm nose job to make room for the electrified gubbins.
The result? A combined power output of 114bhp, 0–62mph in under 10 seconds, and a very city-friendly 4.7m turning circle, handy when navigating multi-storey mazes or escaping awkward cul-de-sacs.
All the Gears, No Tears
The new hybrid setup makes the Aygo X far punchier, especially compared to the old 1.0-litre petrol unit. More importantly for many, it also emits just 86g/km of CO₂ (expected), so it’s got future congestion zones and emissions regs licked.
Toyota’s also chucked in a load of sound-deadening kit, bonnet insulation, underbody shielding, thicker windows and all that jazz, making this Aygo the most refined yet. Not quite a Rolls-Royce, but definitely less rattly than your average tin can on wheels.
Looks That’ll Turn Heads
The styling? Still unmistakably Aygo, just with a few extra scoops of attitude. The front end’s been redesigned with a new grille, sleeker headlights, and a stronger stance that shouts “I’m compact, but I’ve got presence.”
You’ll still get those flared wheel arches and dinky-but-daring 17- or 18” alloys, and Toyota’s even added a bi-tone colour scheme for a bit of flair. Think Cinnamon, Jasmine, Tarragon, and Lavender. It sounds more like a hipster kitchen cupboard than a car showroom, but it works. Fancy a retractable canvas roof with grille-inspired patterns? Go for a higher trim, and it’s yours.
Inside: Bigger Than You’d Expect
Despite its external dinky-ness, the Aygo X Hybrid is surprisingly roomy inside. Four adults can sit in comfort (or two adults, a child, and a damp Labrador), and the boot’s big enough for the weekly shop plus a couple of rogue camping chairs.
You get a smart new 7” digital display, electronic handbrake (boo!), USB-C ports, and optional goodies like a wireless phone charger, power-folding mirrors, and nanoeX air purifying tech, all depending on the spec, of course. UK models haven’t been fully confirmed yet, but expect most of the above.
Safety? Aye, Loads of It
Toyota’s not scrimped on the safety kit either. The new Aygo X Hybrid comes with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes collision avoidance, lane tracing, road sign recognition, and a clever Emergency Driving Stop System in case you, well… don’t.
For the first time on an Aygo, you’ll also get over-the-air software updates, which means your safety tech stays current without you needing to faff about with dealerships or USB sticks.
GR Sport – Aygo Gets Giddy
If you’re feeling a bit lairy, Toyota’s now offering a GR Sport version of the Aygo X Hybrid. It’s still small, but it gets all the racy Gazoo Racing trimmings: Mustard bi-tone paint, a black bonnet, snazzy G-pattern mesh grille, bespoke alloys, and a few extra GR badges inside.
Under the skin, it’s had a mild tweak too, tuned springs, dampers and steering for sharper handling without turning your spine into jelly. It’s not a Nürburgring stormer, but it’ll make the school run a bit more exciting.
Greener Than a Compost Heap
Toyota’s really leaned into reducing the Aygo’s environmental footprint. Compared to the previous petrol-only model, the new hybrid is expected to have an 18% smaller lifetime carbon footprint. That’s down to the more efficient powertrain, smarter logistics, and a few clever production tricks, like using in-mould colour tech instead of paint.
Even the cabin materials have had a green makeover. The new SakuraTouch upholstery is made from over 40% plant-based PVC, cork chips from the wine industry, and recycled PET plastics. Not a single cow in sight, and it still feels nice to sit on. Bonus.
The Aygo X Hybrid will be built at Toyota’s Czech factory in Kolin, which runs on renewable energy, and every aspect, from materials to shipping, has been scrutinised for CO₂ savings. It’s the most efficient Aygo yet, and not just at the fuel pump.
In a Nutshell:
If you want a small, stylish, and shockingly efficient motor that’s more fun than a bus pass and greener than your mum’s veg patch, the Toyota Aygo X Hybrid might just be the answer. It’s got urban charm, hybrid brains, and a whiff of cheeky performance in GR Sport trim, all while slipping quietly through town and sipping fuel like it’s £10 a litre.
