Whether you’re on a camping trip or parked up on a picturesque hillside the VAPair Chilla Fan is easy to use with its simple push button control panel. You can adjust the different fan settings with a quick press or three. There’s no complex settings that you need an engineering degree to master, just a straightforward design that even a sleep-deprived camper can manage. One push get you a good breeze, press twice and it goes up to strong blow, and three gets you a good ol’ gusty wind that you’ll feel up to 2.5 metres away. The fan can also be tilted up and down for directional wafting.

It’s not just a fan, it’s also a portable mini air conditioner.

Using evaporative cooling technology, it combines water with airflow to generate a cool breeze. All you need to do is fill up the tank on the top, press the mist button, and voilà, you’ve got a mist jet flowing towards you. Press it again and there are 3 jets, and one more time get all 5 jets firing. If you combine the cool mist with the fan it’ll make your hot tent feel chilled.

It also has a colourful selection of 7 different mood lights - white, yellow, red, turquoise, purple, deep blue & green - to choose from which again is great in a tent when you just need a little bit of light rather than the ability to put on a shadow puppet show that some camping lights will do.

If you just want the mist it’s almost silent when on, and even with the fan running it’s pretty quiet. There is also a 1/2/3 hour timer button, so if you are needing a bit of cooling before sleep you can set the timer and drift off confident that it will switch off as the night descends.

Then there’s the size.

Unlike some fans that could double as a small satellite dish, the VAPair Chilla is compact and lightweight, making it ideal for those of us who don’t want to wrestle with bulky equipment. It has a carry handle fits nicely in the corner of your tent or the back of your 4x4 without hogging all the space.

How is it powered?

Unlike Wolf’s VoltAir fan which can be charged up, this fan needs power. This may seem strange after I said it’s good in tents, and tents usually don’t have plug sockets, but you don’t need one as this has a USB-C socket on the back, and comes with a USB-C to USB cable so you can connect it to a simple powerbank, or if you have a portable power set up like the EcoFlow River 3 then you will be set for the weekend.

Anything to watch out for?

If you want to continuously use the misting feature, you’ll need to top up the tank every now and then as it doesn’t hold an infinite amount of water (600ml), but if you just keep a water bottle handy you can have cool mist for hours.

Another minor point is its cooling power. The VAPair Chilla does a good job of refreshing a small area, but it might struggle a bit in larger spaces or in extreme heat. If you’re looking for something to cool down a big family sized tent or large caravan, it will probably struggle. It’s more of a personal cooling device than a full-blown air conditioning unit. Still, it’s quite effective for a compact unit and definitely a cut above the average portable fan.
