Big Ben & Palace of Westminster Trivia

♦ What is Big Ben? - Most people have an impression that it's the name of the world famous clock, or perhaps the tower that houses it. Not true! The name actually refers to the 13 ton bell, while the tower is known as St. Stephen's Tower.

♦ Londoners who live an appropriate distance from the Clock Tower and Big Ben can, by means of listening to the chimes both live and on the radio, hear the bell strike 13 times on New Year's Eve. This is possible due to an offset between live and electronically transmitted chimes since the speed of sound is a lot slower than the speed of radio waves.

♦ The Palace of Westminster has accumulated many rules and traditions over the centuries. Members of Parliament may not eat or drink in the chamber; the exception to this rule is the Chancellor of the Exchequer, who may have an alcoholic drink while delivering the Budget statement.
