Deux Smurf Pt 7

Deux Smurf Pt 7

With lots of shows, events and vehicle launches to attend, 2017 was quite a busy year here at Muddy Tower, but throughout the year there have been 2 items of kit that have been totally reliable, the first is my Pentax K3-II camera, and the other is Deux Smurf.

Apart from foreign adventures and sliding off the bonnet of Deux Smurf, not much has happened in the life of my sturdy camera, but Deux Smurf on the other hand, well, we’ve had a bit of fun off the beaten track………

High Mile Club...

High Mile Club...

Whilst rummaging through the paperwork that I have for Deux Smurf the other day, I happen to notice that she was first registered back in 1996 on the 1st of February.  As it was indeed the 1st of February I thought it would be a bit of fun to put a photo of her on social media declaring that it was her 22nd birthday, and what happened next took me by surprise.  I received a message back from Toyota GB asking for her mileage as she may be eligible for their High Mile Club……..

Doon Buggy - Our new Toy

Doon Buggy - Our new Toy

So, quite unexpectedly, I now own a 1970 VW beach buggy, or to be more specific, a LWB Doon Buggy.  I say unexpectedly not because it suddenly landed on my doorstep with a note saying 'Love me forever', but as a 50th birthday present to myself I was originally searching for a 1967 Series IIa Land Rover.  Then it happened, a friend of mine on Facebook posted a photo of his newly acquired beach buggy next to his Land Rover, and my juices began to flow.  I asked Muddy Madam ……….

Deux Smurf Pt 6

Deux Smurf Pt 6

t’s been a while since I last updated you all on Deux Smurfs progress, 5 months I believe, sorry about that.  Though to be fair, nothing exciting has happened in that time, except for the new tyres of course.

In Part 5I mentioned that I desperately needed new tyres, the General Grabbers that were fitted when I bought her were just about legal.  Fortunately my go-to tyre manufacture, BF Goodrich, were kind enough to

Neglect - Deux Smurf Pt 5

Neglect - Deux Smurf Pt 5

Ok, so neglect is quite a strong word, but over the last 4 or so months Deux Smurf has hardly turned a wheel.  The reason behind this abandonment is due to the constant stream of press cars arriving at Muddy Towers.  First there was the L200, then the Evoque, XC90, Sportage, Vitara, Ex-Perience, Subaru AV, 2 Octavias, a couple of Jags and last but not least, a Suzuki S-Cross.

I have of course taken her out on a couple of occasions, just to keep her battery topped up and juices flowing, but last week she ……..

Tink, the Series 1

Tink, the Series 1

You know how it is, you’re out shopping and you start talking to a stranger and inevitably the conversation turns to Land Rovers. This happened the other day when I was casually checking out The Mud Life's website in the Apple Store at the Trauma Centre, Manchester.  Out of the corner of my eye I could see one of the Apple guys glancing at it as he was talking to another customer.  A few moments later I heard a voice over my shoulder, "Why aren't there any Series 1's on there?" he asked.  So this is for you Mr Apple guy (sorry, I forgot your name) and everyone else who has a 'thing' for Series 1 Land Rovers…………

Deux Smurf Pt 4 - New car syndrome

Deux Smurf Pt 4 - New car syndrome

I was at a Land Rover trial the other day, watching my nephew James take part in his first RTV (Road Taxed Vehicle Trial) in my old Discovery.  It was odd parking up next to all the battered Discoverys and Defenders, and although I love the sight of a battered Land Rover, I have to admit Deux Smurf stood out. Not only because was the only Jap 4x4 for miles around, and not battered, but at 20 years old she still looks as fresh as a daisy, especially sat next to a 20 year old Discovery………

Bump!

Bump!

Just as I was about to jump into the shower the other morning, Muddy Madam shouted that she thought someone had just driven into Deux Smurf.

As quickly as I could, I threw on some clothes and rushed outside to watch as a neighbour was busily wiping a huge black mark off the Deux Smurfs front bumper.  What had happened was, she had reversed all the way down the Cul-De-Sac opposite Muddy Towers, reversed around the…..

Oh, the irony…

Oh, the irony…

“What a peculiar position to be in.”  I thought to myself as I pondered the irony of kicking off a new 4x4 and outdoor website and not having a 4x4 to explore the great outdoors in!

For the last 6 years I’ve had a brilliantly reliable 1996 Land Rover Discovery which I bought when I began writing for the now defunct Land Rover World magazine.  She was a cracking vehicle, but like most Land Rovers of a certain era, she…
