A Wheely Good Job…

A while back, around 4 years ago to be precise, I bought a set of five Toyota Land Cruiser Colorado rims and centre caps off Facebook Marketplace for a bargain price of just £125.00.

When I arrived to collect them the seller informed me that they were originally bought as a spare set of wheels for his parent’s Toyota Colorado that they have owned for over 20 years, in which they drove to Russia.

Back then they were a little bit grubby and pitted in places, and the tyres were well past their sell by date, but that didn’t matter as my plan was to give them a thorough clean, repaint them and use them for tyre reviews.

Yeah, that never happened. Actually, I only got the tyres removed last year, because Muddy Madam got sick of seeing them out of the kitchen window and demanded I finally do it, and since then the wheels have remained outside looking rather unloved.

That was until last month when the PR agency for Davanti Tyres asked if I was still interested in reviewing a set of their Terratoura A/T all-terrain tyres.

Of course I said yes, not just because I can’t resist a set of what are essentially free tyres, but I had also read, and heard, many great things about them.  This in turn meant I had to get my bum into gear and sort out the wheels.

On the subject of hearing good things, on the local grapevine I had heard that a local company, Wheel Works in Bolton had a great reputation for doing just that, working on your wheels.

I had a quick chat to Ali about the variety of tyres I would be testing whilst green laning on rocks and in mud, and he wasn’t fazed, so we agreed a price, and I dropped them off at their purpose-built repair centre.

After an assessment, I was told that under all the grime, all five were pitted and chipped. After a deep intake of breath (I suspect), the wheels were chemically stripped, sandblasted and repaired, and after that they were powder coated and painted in their custom bronze. He sent me some pictures of the issues he encountered….

Okay, bronze might not be everyones cup of tea, but I think they are striking. I couldn’t be more impressed, especially with the standard of finish, and all I have to do now is wait to have the Davanti Terratouras fitted. I almost don’t want to get them dirty!

So, whether your vehicle has diamond-cut alloy wheels or a standard set of wheels, Wheel Works in Bolton, with their long-standing reputation for delivering state of art refurbishment services, gets a proper 10/10 from me.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I didn’t get any special rate, I paid £300 for five wheels that now look as good as new.
