Smokey Joe Premium Charcoal Barbecue

We’ve had a 47” Weber Kettle BBQ at Muddy Towers for well over 10 years now, and although it’s described as a compact BBQ, it isn’t really, you wouldn't chuck in the back of your car on a trip to the beach.  Thankfully they do have something that’s a little more manageable - let me introduce you to the Weber Smokey Joe.

We’ve had this Premium version at Muddy Towers now for nearly 5 years, though you wouldn’t think it, going off it’s condition. With a cooking area of 37cm it’s large enough to feed a small family (or me), yet suitable to be packed into the smallest of cars.  Here at Muddy Towers we find it perfect for days out, and at home with family and friends.

As well as being available in 4 cool colours, the Premium Smokey Joe comes with a convenient carrying handle which both locks the lid in place when carrying, and holds it secure to the side whilst cooking.  It also comes with a handy plastic container that fits neatly inside your Smokey Joe and is used for storing charcoal, therefore negating the need to carry an extra bag along with you.

Unlike other portable BBQs we have, the Smokey Joe’s grill sits about an inch within the base, meaning that if you’re on uneven ground, or you kick it, food doesn’t roll onto the floor. There is a vented top plate and side vents, all of which can be opened and closed depending on how much air you want going through your coals, and what food you are cooking.

The Smokey Joe may be portable and easy to carry, but is no lightweight when it comes to specifications; it has a plated steel cooking grate, a heavy gauge steel charcoal grate and a porcelain enamelled bowl and tub. In all the years we’ve had it, it’s been kept outside, but under a cover, and remarkably it’s remained pretty much ‘as new’. That won't surprise when you realise that, like all the Weber range, it comes with a 10 year limited warranty.

If I have only one criticism - if it’s not secured in your car, then it will roll around at the first opportunity, due mainly to its fairly high centre of gravity, 3 legs and round body.

Though having said that, it isn’t actually a criticism at all, just an observation; so when you pack it in the back of your car, make sure it’s secure.

As you’ll read elsewhere on the website, we have a wide collection of stoves and cooking paraphernalia, but if we’re going out for the day and fancy a BBQ, Joe is our go-to guy!
