Unimogs bolster Environment Agency flood response fleet
The Environment Agency has added two Mercedes-Benz Unimogs to its specialist incident response fleet, strengthening its ability to respond quickly to flood emergencies across the UK. The vehicles will be used to rapidly deploy personnel, pumps and heavy equipment, including towing excavators and transporting vital machinery to hard-to-reach locations.
Specified for demanding emergency work, the Unimogs are ADR compliant, allowing them to safely carry large fuel cells needed to keep pumps and generators running during prolonged incidents. Their impressive wading capability also means they can deliver equipment into areas already affected by flooding, often where conventional vehicles simply can’t operate.
Chosen following a tender for a highly capable off-road vehicle that could also operate as an on-road, Operator Licenced commercial vehicle, the Unimog stood out thanks to its high towing capacity, portal axles, exceptional ground clearance and advanced all-wheel drive system.
Ross Paterson, Head of Special Trucks at Daimler Truck UK, said the addition of the Unimogs will help the Environment Agency reach incidents requiring specialist equipment more effectively, praising the support and training provided by South Cave Tractors. Abbie Levitt of South Cave Tractors added that seeing the vehicles in action is a proud moment, combining the Unimog’s proven off-road ability with the stringent safety requirements of a modern commercial vehicle.
