Black Diamond Moji R+ Lantern

When camping the Black Diamond Moji R+ Lantern might just be your new best mate. This pocket-sized powerhouse is a simple bit of kit that brings a surprising amount of light to your tent, boot area, or late-night picnic table. Let’s start with what makes the Moji R+ a standout.

First off – size. At first glance, the Moji R+ is a hockey-puck shaped light that sits neatly in the palm of your hand. It’s only 6cm across, and just under 4 cm tall, incredibly lightweight, and tucks easily into any backpack, glovebox or pocket. You’d barely notice it’s there – until you need it.

Ease of use is a real strong point. You can hang it inside your tent using the double-hook system, or simply sit it on a table or tree stump. It doesn’t take up much room in your kit bag, either – small enough to tuck into a coat pocket and forget about until you need it. It also has 4 magnets, so if you need to look under the bonnet or change a wheel just pop it on a panel.

The body is sturdy enough for camping use, and it’s IPX4 rated, meaning it’ll survive the odd downpour or splash – perfect for unpredictable British weather.

The brightness is impressive for its size, offering up to 200 lumens on the highest setting. That’s more than enough to light up a 4-person tent or a small cooking area. When I took it to a recent festival I hooked it on the highest point of the tent , and was amazed by its output, I could see everything! Then brought it down to put by my bed to use as a nightlight on the low setting.

You can pick between solid or strobing white light, a full rainbow spectrum of colour or a relaxing campfire lighting mode. Whether you want full beam for cooking, a softer glow for reading, or some moody red lighting to preserve your night vision, the Moji R+ delivers.

Battery life is decent too. You can get several nights of on-and-off use on a single charge, though it does depend on brightness levels. At the highest 200 lumen setting you will get 5 hours, 100 lumen 8 hours and, according to the box, a whopping 100 hours at 10 lumen (I haven’t tested this).

It’s rechargeable and comes with a Micro-USB to USB mini cable. Charge it up before your trip, and you’re good to go, which means no more scrabbling about for fresh AA batteries when you’re halfway up a Welsh mountain or deep in a Cumbrian forest.

Any drawbacks?

Now, that single-button control can take a few goes to get used to. Sometimes you’ll find yourself cycling through modes, and if it is up high you’ll probably blind yourself every time you hit the 200 lumen setting, and while the colour modes are fun, they’re more of a novelty than a necessity.

Also, because it’s rechargeable only, you’ll need a power bank or solar charger on longer trips, especially if you're off-grid for several days, but if you are driving about that won’t be an issue, as long as you have a USB socket in your car.

Our verdict

For short camping trips, vanlife weekends, or even just keeping in the glove box of your 4x4 for emergencies, the Black Diamond Moji R+ is a brilliantly compact and versatile light that’s hard not to like. Compact, colourful, and refreshingly clever, this little lantern punches well above its weight in the wild.

Whether you’re reading a map, making a brew, or just adding a bit of ambience to your campsite, this little lantern proves that good things really do come in small, glowing packages.
